Elements of Story

The art of storytelling requires not only the ability to craft a compelling plot, but also to communicate it effectively, adapt it to the context and the audience, and infuse it with authenticity, empathy, and purpose. Developmental editing focuses on the story itself: the plot, the characters, the twists, the romance, and all the fun stuff. I'll look at all the different threads of conflict, motivation, goals, and stakes and make sure that they are all weaved together into the most exciting and emotionally impactful experience.  I'll ensure that there is character and relationship transformation blooming throughout the story to capture reader's hearts and have them turning pages well past bedtime. I'll look at how the characters–with their flaws, past experiences, and personalities–interact with the conflicts that arise when they pursue their goals and how it all culminates in a satisfying ending. I'll also do a story-wide check on pacing, setting, mood/tone, point of view, etc.

This service includes a detailed editorial assessment letter outlining these concepts as they apply to your manuscript, as well as specific queries and limited changes to the text to show what I mean. This service does not address writing technique (line editing) or corrections of grammar, spelling, and other technical errors (copyediting). There may be a small amount of overlap with line and copyediting, but focuses on the story content, not the delivery.
